The card is laminated with a smooth velvet finish and is resistant to scratches. The new finish feels somewhat like the standard matte finish cards, but the effect is even smoother. The process involves special plates and the end product is another advancement in laminated cards. This smooth finish allows for two important features in personalization that cannot be accomplished with a regular matte finish:

1. The magnetic stripe can be encoded.
2. The card will accept thermal print imaging.
