January 09, 2006 "This is mainly a quality management certification; a manufacturing practice upgrade," said Nicholas J. Cooney, VCT president. "It is a fluid certification process, a way of running plants with standards continuously being improved. Systems and procedures are in a flux with constant upgrades and modifications." Cooney said it is "an absolute necessity to implement the guidelines of the 9001:2000 certification. "It helps VCT's market position with strategic customers such as banks and large retailers. The way the market is now, customers ask the question whether you are ISO certified when sending out bids." This certification applies to the plastic card market such as credit cards, membership cards, loyalty cards, gift cards, and the like. "Customer expectations are that they want it to be perfect, that’s the test," Cooney asserts. When end users receive their card in the mail, it is the image of the issuing institution that they see. VCT therefore has systems and procedures in place to monitor and assure high quality from the day the product comes in the door until it is delivered to the customer. "Quality standards are extremely high," Cooney concludes: "There is no room for imperfection, scratchesanything." Established by the International Organization for Standardization, the ISO 9001:2000 certification for quality system management requires companies to understand customer needs, implement a documented quality system, and deliver products that meet customer requirements. Strong emphasis is placed on a pro-active management team, and the continuous, measurable improvement of a well-trained work force. Techniques used include customer feedback, internal audits, documentation, and third-party validation. Adopted by more than 100 countries, the ISO standards are universally recognized as a de facto requirement for doing business around the world. |
